The Achievers of America consists of men and women / boys and girls of all ages and all functional levels - challenged, handicapped, and non-handicapped people. Our purpose is to give each person the opportunity to participate, get involved, make choices and decisions on their own, be independent (always with some help when needed), gain self esteem, and accept any challenge that may occur while playing the sport of softball

Being a part of the Achievers of America program can be helpful in coping with everyday situations while offering a chance to socialize with others, improve self esteem and have a great time learning and belonging to a team. Everyone gets up to bat, runs the bases and gets a "high five" when coming home

The Achievers of America was started in 1998 by Steve Biondo, along with the help of Frank & Lillian DeMaeyer, both of Queens, NY, Ten players, including Steve's son Raymond and Frank's son Andrew began what has grown to over 100 people in two states

In August of 2000, Steve also started the same program in the State of Florida, with the help of Joe & Rose Carauna, of Port Richey, FL, along with their daughter Tina. There is now about 100 players and still growing. He has also expanded this program by starting a bowling league in the off season in Florida

Steve Biondo is a Special Olympics Coach and enjoys the challenge of teaching and helping others. As his children Denise, Steven, Raymond were growing up and playing with their friends he would help teach them to play all types of sports and activities and liked the idea of watching them improve and most of all the excitement they expressed when they accomplished something.. This was the reward for Steve's efforts

When his son Steven was younger, and wanted to play ball on a Little League Baseball team, Steve brought him to the field to try out for the team. After the couch selected the players he wanted, he looked over to the remaining 5 or 6 kids and said "Come back next year, you did not make the team". I asked him if there was something we could do for the five or six children that did not make the team. You should have seen their faces and tears while holding their gloves. It was heartbreaking...

At the time Steve was not able to get anyone interested in starting a team. As years went by his son, Raymond, joined the Special Olympics and Steve really got interested in helping to teach the challenged. It was rewarding, He enjoy the reaction they all express while learning (It's Great!). He thought it would be nice for them to have their own softball team. In 1998, he asked around for volunteers at the Larry Hirsch Sunday Morning bowling for the challenged at JIB Lanes in Flushing, NY (that bowling program has been going on for over 30 years). Steve asked Frank DeMaeyer if he would like to start the Achievers with him; and Frank said,

"Yes".

The Achievers also starting a Bowling league in Pasco County, FL.

Our goal is to get more people interested in this program in as many towns as possible throughout the United States. All helping the challenged by giving them the opportunity to achieve their goals and dreams - no matter what their challenge.
