''THE ACHIEVERS'' ''See Through the eyes of the Coach''

Written by Steve Biondo

Film starts with the song, "Thereıs a Hero in Everybodyıs Heart"

Steve is walking through a mall with his son Raymond and spots a handicapped person walking with his mom and dad. Steve looks for an Achievers card with all the information about the Achievers. Then Steve walks up to them and says, "Hello" then asks if their son plays softball? Their reply was, " No'" Steve looks at the challenged person and asked, "Whatıs your name". His mom said, Tommy, and then Steve asked him, "Do you like to play softball?" Steve gets back a big yes. Then the mom says, ³Tommy canıt play because of his situation², Steve says, ³I started a program call the Achievers of America, itıs a softball and bowling program for the handicapped and challenged. Hereıs my card, why donıt you stop by and see everyone enjoying themselves.² Steve says, '"He doesnıt have to play, he can just watch. There are refreshments like bagels and cream cheese, pretzels, cookies, juice, soda and even pickles. " Then Raymond says yes, "Yes, thatıs right, when you become an Achiever you get socks, pants, belt, hat, a shirt that says Achievers and you get a number on the back of the shirt and guess what, Iım the pitcher and Iıll teach you to play softball, youıll have a good time; it is a lot of fun. Steve then asked Tommy if he would like to have your own uniform and play softball. Tommy says yes but this time with a great big smile. The parents say it sounds interesting and theyıll try to come to the next game. They shake hands and Steve gives a high five to Tommy and goes on this way.

Tuesday rolls around and Steve needs to prepare for Wednesdayıs softball game. He has to call Bill and set up an order of bagels and Dunkin Donut Munches which he donates to the Achievers each week. Then Steve goes to the supermarket to pick up the other refreshments. That night Steve and his son load the van with all the equipment for the softball game, so they can be on time to set up for Wednesday morning.

. . . , , ,

On the way to the field they shop to pick up little Ricky, an Achiever that needs a ride. Steve arrives at the field and says hello to some of the volunteers and players that got there early. Raymond gets some help to unload the van and put up the supporter banners on the fence. Steve sets up the two tarps that give shade in the refreshment area. The Achievers start to come to the field by vans and cars. There are about sixty five players all dressed in their uniforms. The refreshments are put out on a table and a volunteer starts to put cream cheese on the bagels. Joe Caruana who is the head coach goes for the ice. Everyone is having some refreshments and talking with each other while waiting to play softball.

Joes wife Rose, yells out, ³Achievers let's go on the field to exercise.² Everyone needs to exercise to get ready to play ball. When thatıs been done, someone gets the blue Captainıs Box that has everyoneıs name in it. Two names are drawn to be captain for this game. Everyone has a chance to be captain once. Teams are chosen by flipping a coin to see who are the Mets or the Yankees. The Met Achievers wear the Achievers hat; the Yankees wear a Yankee hat. Everyone has the choice to be pitcher or catcher each week.

Today there are about thirty two players on each team and the volunteers are out in the field to help out with any balls that are hit in the directions of the players, also assisting the runners on the bases. The players take their position on field and the extra players are put in the outfield. A volunteer named John passes out the gloves and balls for every one; they play catch for a while, as the volunteers help those who need extra help. The players also assist other players giving them pointers on how to catch. When they have had enough practice, Steve yells out, ³Are you guys ready to play ball?² Everybody yells ³Yes². Steve says, ³Letıs play ball² and the Mets take the field because they won the toss and the Yankees go to the dugout. A player named Mathew who is also a volunteer helps out with some of the other players. He enjoys assisting those who need extra help. Mathew also likes to play ball with them. His mother is a volunteer, her name is Carol. Matthew and Carol loved to come to the field and help the Achievers play softball. Matthew was not only a player, he also coached the Achievers. He enjoyed showing them how to improve their skills whenever possible. They looked up to him not only because of his size, but the way he showed interest in helping them.

. . . , , ,

The game was started and Matthew was covering third base, while another player named Chuck was pitching to Steve's son Raymond. Before the first pitch was thrown Raymond called time out and walked to the pitchers mound with a plan. He asked Chuck to pitch a slow ball so he could hit it to Matthew. The plan was set and Chuck followed through with a slow pitch. Raymond hit the ball to Matthew and as Matthew attempted to catch the ball he dropped it, Raymond made it to first base laughing along with Chuck and teasing Matthew because he dropped the ball. Raymond said, "I'm safe! HA HA, good job Chucky," they shouted out, ''You dropped the ball Matthew HA HA,'' they really got a kick out of their successful plan and Matthew's so called error... you wonder if Matthew sort of planned it, because you could see how much Matthew enjoyed seeing Raymond and Chuck teasing him. It was fun watching them.

A batter comes up to bat named Adam. The ball is pitched, he swings and misses, after a few times he finally hits the ball and runs to first base, Adam is tagged out. but stays on base.

The next batter is Bobby. He's about 40 years old. Bobby has autism. He doesn't speak and has coordination problems. When he comes up to the plate to hit the ball, he did not have a bat. He thought someone would get it for him. He looked at Steve, Steve said, "Bobby where's your bat?" His mother was sitting in the bleachers watching. Steve said, ŒŒGo get a bat'' this was a first for him. He looked over at the bats and walked over slowly and managed to pick up a bat and looked at Steve and started to walk towards him (his mother was so proud he did this on his own, she was smiling) Well, Steve looked at Bobby and said "Bobby, that's the wrong bat. It's too small. Get the other bat''. Well he looked at Steve, then turned around and slowly put the bat down and picked up the other bat. He looked back at Steve and smiled, like he was proud of the fact that he did this by himself. You could see the expression on his face. Well, you should have seen the expression on his mothers face. She couldn't believe what she saw. She almost fell off the bleachers. It was great! For a guy that can't say much, he says it all.

When Bob goes up to bat, he looks over to the outfield then looks back at Steve with a smile, and you know he is saying he is going to hit a home run. When the ball hits the bat, you can see his face light up; as he gives that little smile and a gesture that says I did It! Then Steve says excitedly, ''RUN RUN RUN, You Hit The Ball, HOME RUN BOBBY, GO BOBBY RUN!'' as he starts to head for first base with the help of a volunteer, He looks Back and proudly gives Steve that smile, then heads to first, of course at his own pace and as happy as can be. Bobby makes all of us proud of him. What more can you say, when Bobby says It all, with that smile of his. Steve yell's out, batter up''.

. . . , , ,

The next batter is Mary. She could use some help. Steve is right there and lets her try to hit the ball herself. After a few misses she manages to hit's the ball, Steve sayıs ''Run, Run'' The bases are loaded. When each player runs home they get a high five at home plate and cheered on by their teammates. A Volunteer named Carmine, comes out to the field with water cups for everyone that wants a drink. The next batter is Sharon, she is very shy and timid, and was afraid to get up to bat. With the help of one of the volunteers, she was brought to the plate to hit the ball. The volunteer told Steve Sharon had never done anything like this before and she was scared. Steve told her not to be afraid, and he would be here to help her. After a few swings, she managed to hit the ball and ran to first base, and then she ran the rest of the bases and crossed over home plate to receive her high five. She had a great big smile on her face and you could see the joy she got from the excitement of playing and running the bases, she looked at Steve and said, ŒŒthat was fun''. She really seemed to enjoy herself. At the end of the game, just before she was leaving to go home, Sharon came to Steve, looking him straight in his eyes and said ''Thank you, I'm not afraid anymore, I want to do it again, I like to play softball and want to play next week''. I wish you could of have seen the expression on her face....It was moving.

After the game, Steve is leaving the field with his son Raymond and Tina. He sees a for sale sign on a piece of property about 700 feet from the field and thinks this would be an ideal spot for a physicality for the challenged and handicapped community. He jots down the number and when he gets home he calls it to ask for information on the property, the owners name is Pierre Rigo. Pierre tells Steve all the information he needs to know to make a decision on this piece of property. Steve explains to Pierre what his plan is and what he would like to build if the property is big enough for his idea for the project. Well it turns out that this property has all the possibilities and more, such as being able to put up a six story building for offices and programs, a two story building for supportive living for people with disabilities and senior citizens, there is also an existing 11,000 square foot building that is taking in about $90,000 dollars a year. It has a no flood zone rating; about 10 feet higher than the surrounding properties and because of this Steve suggests that the building should be built as a shelter to be used in the event of an emergency for the surrounding communities.

Steve asks Pierre if he would like to go down in history and make this become a reality, Steve said, ''I'll do what ever it takes to promote this idea, I just need you to go along with what ever time it takes to raise the funds needed to purchase this property. Buy the way, how much do you asking for the 4,9 acres and the existing building? Pierre says, $2.325 million, and yes I would like to help you with this project, my wife is always saying, when am I going to retire, I'm always working, this would be a good reason to retire and help out the community, it could help so many people. I like the idea and I will hold up on any offers for the property for a few months to give you a chance to get something going. I will put my proposal in writing to help you get started''.

Steve puts together his plan and contacts Florida Senator Mike Fasano and sets up an appointment to meet with him at his office. Senator Fasano likes the idea and said it's a well needed facility that will be very helpful to the local residents living in the community, the surrounding communities and the state of Florida; it will also bring jobs to the area. Iım very interested in this project and will help you with any preparations you may need. Itıs a wonderful idea''. Senator Fasano prepares the necessary application forms to request the requisition for a grant for the funds needed to purchase the property. Fasano says, ''It will take about 7 or 8 months to see if the Governor will approve the grant, there is no guarantee, but I think this is a well needed project and I will do what ever I can to help have this become a reality. My staff is here to help if you should need any assistance, give my assistant Greg Giordano a call and he'll be glad to work along with you. Keep up the goodwork''.

. . . , , ,

Steve and a few friends were invited to a local club, where his friend Stan Prinston was performing with his band called Direct Effect. Stan had come up with an idea of putting on variety shows throughout the year at different locations, to help raise funds for the Achievers program and said we could call it, ''The Achievers Broadway Variety, Show of Shows''. Steve thought it was a great idea. Stan thought the first benefit should be held at the Palace Grand in Hudson Fl. Steve said he would stop by and talk with the owner Nick Sessa who he happens to know and see if there is an open date for the beginning of December for a Christmas show.

As the night went on Steve and his friends met a couple that were sitting at the next table and started a conversation, they asked the couple if they would like to come and sit at their table, they said yes. While they were enjoying the performance by Stan Prinston a conversation came up about why they were at the club on a Tuesday night? The reason they gave was to get some time away from their son, Steve asked what was the problem? They explained that their son was challenged and he is 13 years old and very big for his age. ³He has two brothers, one 7 years old, and the other is 19 years old, he always argues with them and never wants to get involved with anything, whether itıs in school or at home and he has no interest in anything. He always wears a hooded sweatshirt so no one could see him. His attitude is very negative and has temper tantrums. He upsets the house every day of the week. Thereıs no let up. We canıt get him to do anything, we have tried all different types of medication, some make him very drowsy and sleepy all the time, and thatıs no good. ItŒs very hard to find the proper medicine that will balance him out so he can function and not be so depressed and antagonizing to everyone, especially his family. He has no friends. Itıs a terrible thing not to be able to help him itıs actually driving me up a wall, thatıs the reason weıre out tonight on a Tuesday evening. I just needed to get away, even for a little while².

Steve told her about the Achievers of America program and the successful stories about the people that have actually come out of their shell and participated to everyoneıs amazement. Steve made a suggestion that she bring her son to the field just to socialize and have some refreshments. Steve said, ³Maybe I can get him to play softball with the other players'', the mom replied, ³He doesnıt want to go anywhere, but Iıll try my best to bring him. The next day Steve went to the field and sure enough, there she was with her son Anthony. He was very tall for his age and his head was covered with his hood, you could hardly see his face just like his mother said. She introduced Steve to Anthony and as quickly as he said hello, Steve asked him if he would like to play softball? His quick response was, ³No I donıt like to play softball'', Steve said, ³OK, but I need some help unloading the equipment from the van, could you help me?, Anthony said, ''OK'' Steve then gave him something to do and asked his mom if itıs OK to handle him the way he thought best. She said, ³I had to fight with him just to get him in the car, good luck².

Steve proceeded to set up the playing area and every few minutes Steve gave Anthony something to do. For example Steve called out ''Anthony, I need some help, give me a hand''. Then Steve would introduce him to another Achiever along the way and ask him to assist that person with a chore. A little while later, Steve called him over to the van where the uniforms were and asked him if he wanted a uniform, he said, ''No, I donıt want to have one². Steve then asked, ''How about having an Achievers hat'' He replied,ı I donıt like wearing hat''. He was looking at Steve with his head completely covered with his hood; you could just about see his face. Steve said, ''OK, do me a favor, just try this hat on, Iıd like to see it on you², He took the hat and put it on his head. Steve quickly said, ''Hey, you look good, look at yourself in the van window''. Steve then asked him to put his hood on over his hat, just showing the front part, while looking at the reflection of him, he smiled. Steve said, ''Leave it on, you look good, now come with me, I need you to help me show the players how to exercise.² He said, ''OK'' and followed Steve to the field along with about 50 players. We started to exercise showing him how to get ready to play softball. He followed Steve's instructions along with everyone else.

The next thing Steve had to do was to divide the players in to two teams, the Yankees, and the Mets and choose a captain for each team. Because Anthony was new Steve asked him if he wanted to be a captain and thought it would be good for him. Anthony asked what a captain does. Steve told him, ''You have the choice to be a Yankee or a Met and be the first batter or the fourth batter''. He said, ''OK, what should I do'' Steve told him, ''you need to choose another person and flip a coin to pick a team, the Mets or the Yankees and who goes up to bat first.'' Anthony won the Coin toss, and wanted to be the Yankees. Steve told him he needed to wear a Yankee hat and gave him one, Anthony took the hat and said, ³thank you,² He removed the Achievers hat and he put the Yankee hat on with his hood over it, he said Iıll hold my Achievers hat in my pocket. Steve then told him to go get a glove that he felt good with. He asked Steve if he would help him chose one. Steve said, ''yes'' and gave him some pointers on how to catch the ball with the glove, then had him practice with other Achievers throwing back and forth, catching grounders, and pop ups. When they were through, Steve asked Anthony to pitch for him. Steve showed him some pointers, along with two other Achievers and left them alone to practice.

Anthony was interested and didnıt seem to mind the help, even from one of his peers. Anthony pitched to about 5 or 6 batters and as they hit the ball Anthony tried to catch them. He seemed to enjoy being on the field. When it was his turn to bat, he came up to the plate wearing his hat and hood. He wasnıt sure which side of the plate he should be on, also which way he should hold the bat, lefty or rightly. He tried both ways and chose lefty. He said he liked it better this way. Steve let him swing a few times, then he was ready to hit the ball, and that he did, even with his hood on. After a couple of misses he hit the ball to first base. Then Steve let him hit again and he hit towards second base and ran with all the excitement youıd expect. Steve noticed his hood fell to his shoulders as he was running. Then as other batters hit the ball he ran around to home plate to receive a high five and at the same time he gave Steve a smile. Steve could see that he was enjoying himself. It was a good feeling seeing him participating and following instructions without hesitation and actually wanted to be part of the team.

Anthonyıs mother came to Steve and asked if she could take him out of the game because he has a doctorıs appointment. Steve said sure and asked her, ''Well, what do you think'' She said, ''I canıt believe my eyes, Thank you''. Then Anthony gave Steve the Yankee hat and asked if he could keep the Achievers hat? Steve said, ''Sure, itıs yours'' He smiled and thanked Steve. Steve said, ŒŒGood bye and I hope to see you next week''. But what follows next, really tops it off. As Anthony and his mom were leaving the field, heading towards their car, which took a few minutes, Steve looked back at them a couple of times, thinking of the progress Anthony had made. All of a sudden, Steve noticed a white hat on Anthonyıs head. He was wearing the Achievers hat and his hood was down around his shoulders. Steve got so excited seeing Anthony with his hat on, Steve had to tell someone. He was as happy as a kid. This really moved Steve, just knowing how proud Anthony felt after succeedingŠ He should only have known how proud Steve was, to have been able to help him. Anthony is an Achiever.

At the end of the game, Steve is taking a break and starts to talk to some of the volunteers about raising some funds for the Achievers. A volunteer named Carol said, ''too bad my father wasnıt helpful; he has the means to help fund the program. But I havenıt spoken to him in years''. Steve asked, ''What is his name'' Carol said, ''Chris Maddox''.

That night Steve was at a local restaurant and happened to meet a comedian that was appearing at the famous Palace Grand. He was having dinner with about 5 or 6 people. Steve thought it would be a good idea to introduce himself and tells hlm about the Achievers program. The comedian was very gracious and funny at the same time; they all had a few laughs. Then Steve gave a copy of the Achievers yearbook to the comedian, the comedian looked at Steve and said, "What do you want me to do with this?"... Steve said, "Look it over and if you think I should change anything, give me a call''. In a joking way the comedian started to say something to the 5 or 6 people that were sitting at his table regarding Steve and his program, It went like this, the comedian said, "You see this guy, (referring to Steve), 9 out of 10 people", then Steve stopped him and said, "hold it sir, let me tell you, you have just met the tenth person". Well everyone had a good laugh, then the comedian said, ''I'm very impressed with your program, it's a wonderful program, it gives everyone a chance to do things that they never in their lifetime could ever dreamed they could do. I can see the possibility in helping thousands of people, I would be very proud to be part of it''. While Steve and the comedian were exchanging telephone numbers, Steve came up with the idea of someday having a fundraiser at the Palace Grand and thought he could ask the comedian If he would like to be a guest and perform for the Achievers.

. . . , , ,

The next day Steve is making copies at the Office Depot for the Achievers program. Robert who is head of the copy center at Office depot says, ³Steve youıre here again.² Steve says, ³We need to let people know about our program the best way is to pass out yearbooks and letters maybe someone will donate so I can pay your printing bill. ''Robert laughs. Steve says, ³Iım only kidding, I need this information to go to some important people that might be able to help the Achievers. I have a list of people Iım going to tomorrow.²

Steve is in his office looking up names of people and business in the area that he could call and ask for donations. Steve contacted State Senator Mike Fasano and told him about his program. The senator was impressed with the Achievers Program and made a donation to the Achievers. As Steve was looking for other people to contact he came across Chris Maddox name, and thought, ³why not ask him for support?² Steve needed to ask Carol for her approval. So he called Carol and asked her if she would mind if he asked Maddox for a donation. Carol said try if you want, ³Lots of Luck''. There was no relationship between them for many years. Her father has been out of her life for so long that Carol seemed like she didnıt care one way or another.

One day as all the Achievers were having refreshments before the game, Steve met a boy at the field named David. His counselor told him he has autism and doesn't speak or socialize with anyone. The counselor brought him to the field just to be with the other people and try to have him socialize. He said he couldn't play softball because of his situation. Not only was he not able to talk, he seemed to be in his own world. Steve was told that sometimes he has behavioral problems and needs special attention. Steve told the counselor he understood and would like to try something. The counselor said, ''OK give it a try''. Steve walked over to the refreshment table where David was standing and said, ''Hello,'' to David and took an apple off the table and at the same time he said to David ''Do me a favor, hold this apple for me''. David looked at Steve, Steve then pushed the apple into his hand and David held it. Steve turned and walked away for a few minutes, giving instructions to the rest of the team. Steve quickly came back to David and he was still holding the apple. Steve thanked David for holding the apple and took it from him, then said,'' David, I need you on the field. Come with me''. Steve turned around and walked toward the pitchers mound. Steve didn't think David would follow him, so he didn't look back. The counselor must have thought Steve was crazy. When Steve got to the mound he turned around and to his surprise, David had followed him. Steve didn't expect him to be there and said,'' hey David, I'm glad your here, I need you to hit the ball. Come with me, I want you to hold the bat.'' He could only hold the bat with one hand, but that's okay. Steve helped him hit the ball, then said, ''RUN RUN RUN!''. The counselor and those who knew David had a tear in their eye. They really got emotional, they were so happy for David. The fact that he participated was great. He went around the bases with assistance and received a high five for crossing home plate. This was a great achievement for David. He was an ''Achiever'' even with his limited disabilities, he liked to play softball. Steve told the counselors and volunteers to Just give them a chance and with just a little effort, you can change a personıs life. Then you'll be an Achiever.... just like David.

The next batter was an Achiever named Debby, and it was her first time that she ever played softball. Debby was shy and she was not too anxious to get up to bat, but with a little coaching, she decided to try and hit the ball. She came up to the plate and waited for the pitcher to pitch the ball. All of a sudden Debby put the bat down and said, ''I can't do it,'' and started to cry with her hands covering her face. It was sad to see her crying like that but Steve managed to calm her down, and said ''it's okay don't be afraid you can do it. I'll be here to help you, it's okay.'' She composed herself and said ''OK, I'll try.'' Sure enough, she hit the ball between first and second base and ran to first base with the biggest smile on her face, and was so happy with that she had done. As her teammates came up to bat, Debby ran the bases and came home, receiving a high five. Steve told her "you did good, I told you could do it" She said to me, ''that was fun''. The rest of her team came up to bat, ending the inning. Then it was her turn to go on the field. Debby put her glove on and took her position on the field. She really was enjoying herself. After 7 or 8 batters came up to bat, we needed to change the pitcher for some reason. Steve yelled out and asked if any one wanted to pitch? Debby surprised him and said, ''I'll do it.'' Steve said, ''Really?'' She said, ''yes''. Steve showed her how to throw the ball a couple of times and she caught on pretty quick. She pitched to five or six batters and they all hit the ball and ran the bases. You could see she liked the idea of pitching. The next batter came up to bat and Debby pitched him the ball, As quick as she threw the ball he hit it straight back to her hitting her in the stomach. This shocked Debby more than it hurt her. She held her stomach and started to cry. Steve ran over to see that she was okay and comfort her. She was just a little shook up. A couple of volunteers started to walk her off the field. Steve then yelled out. ''We need another pitcher anyone want to pitch? none of the Achievers responded. Then one of the volunteers said, ''I'll pitch''. When Debby heard the volunteer say that she would pitch, Debby said ''OH NO, OH NO, I'LL PITCH''. She grabbed the ball and her glove, then went to the pitchers mound and started to pitch as if nothing happened. The tears were wiped away and she shook it off and finished the game just as a pro would. Debby is a true believer in our slogan and remembered: ''The Rules Are,..... There Are No Rules... (except one)... Only The Acheievers Play!

Next Scene

The Achievers have a table at the USA Flea Market to exhibit photos of the Achievers and to give out flyers promoting their program and do a little fundraising with candy bars. It's a meeting place for anyone from the community that would like some information. One day a Wrestling promoter named Al Schaefer and his friend Jeff, who is in charge of a community center in the area, stopped by and was looking over the photos and flyers on the Achievers table and was impressed with this program. Al got a great idea for a fundraiser and said, ''We should come up with a new concept in wrestling and have wrestling like it used to be, back in the old days. You know, none of the stuff that goes on in the ring today. It's become an adult thing and that's ok if your an adult, but how about the children or those who don't want that type of wrestling, I can come up with some big time wrestlers that would love the idea to have a match like that all the time,'' Al said. ''This is going to be a new concept in wrestling, with no swearing, no drinking, no chairs, garbage cans or intimating sexual gestures thatıs not fit for family viewing. I could give some of the proceeds to the Achievers program, and help a lot a lot of kids, boy I like the Idea. I need to set up an appointment with the coach of the Achievers. What do you think Jeff''? Jeff said, ''I think it's a good idea and the match could be held at the community center''. Al contacted Steve and gave him all the details, Steve liked the idea and thought it was a good promotion for the Achievers, they set up a meeting and worked out all the details and a date was set for about five weeks from now.

The next day Steve is calling on a few businesses for donations and comes across Maddoxıs name. Steve called Maddox and gave his pitch. Maddox asked, ²Who are the Achievers?'' Steve tells Maddox about the Achievers and the program thatıs available for anyone no matter what their disability. Steve tells Maddox that each player has a full uniform. Maddox stops Steve and says, ³Why a full uniform why not just a shirt and a hat that should be enough. Why knock yourself out with a full uniform. I think your wasting your time². Steve comes right back with how proud every Achiever is with their uniform and how proud their parents are seeing them dressed up and on their own team. Maddox says, ''I canıt be bothered with this, I have no time and Iım not interested, itıs like all the other organizations that bother me each month. Please, donıt ask me because Iım not interested and like I said, I think you are wasting your time with full uniforms. A hat, a shirt, thatıs enough. Whoıs going to pay for this uniform? It doesnıt make sense. Maddox is getting annoyed with the whole thing and so is Steve, Steve answers back in a sarcastic tone but polite enough not to get Maddox any more annoyed than he is. Steve says, An Achievers life is limited to certain activities and this program puts them in the main stream of our world...the way it should be. ³If a player hasnıt got the money for a uniform, we pay for the uniform, we want the players to fully participate. We donıt let money stop the opportunity to have a person play, thatıs one of the reasons we need donations and support from our local businesses. These people ask for nothing. They give you and everyone else something money canıt buy, it's love, you know as well as I do, money canıt buy love and if a uniform makes them happy, then Iıll see to it that they get their uniform. An Achievers life is limited to certain activities. With the help of their parents, they dress up to get ready to play softball. This person is a big part of the playersı life and should be proud of being there for them. They helped their child accomplish a dream come true, they should be proud they gave them this opportunity. Steve said ''Well, Thank you for your time and would it be ok for me to mail you some information for you to look at when you get the time?² Maddox says, ³I donıt think Iıll have the time, but if you want to mail it, go ahead''. It seemed like Steve and Maddox didnıt get along on the phone, Maddox wasnıt a happy person with all his business problems, but deep down there was something he knew wasnıt right, maybe it was his relationship with his daughter making him more bitter towards everything and everybody. What could happen when they meet? Steve mailed Maddox all the information about the Achievers along with a flyer about ''how proud they are to wear their uniform'' Just to make a point.

Next Scene

The Achievers were invited to a fundraiser that one of the local agencies were having. The main speeker was the ''Real Rain man'' Kim Peek. A movie was made of his story and Dustin Hoffman played his part. Kim Peek is amazing, his ability to remember every thing he reads is mind boggling. He has read over 11,000 books and remembers what he has read. His father was the speaker at the function. He asked anyone to tell Kim the date they were born on. When a date was given to Kim, he would come back with the day of the week that person was born on and what year they would retire at 65 years from their date of birth. Kim answered as quickly as the date was given to him. Another question was to tell Kim the state and town they come from and Kim would give them the main road going through their town and their zip code. When Kims father asked anyone to ask Kim any question they would like. one person stood up and asked Kim to tell everyone both names of the teams who played in the super bowl, who won and their scores, for the last 20 years. Kims father stood up and said, ''Oh No, we'll be here all night, Kim just give him the last 10 years''. Believe it or not, Kim gave both names of the teams and the scores for the last 10 years with out hesitation. Everyone was amazed.

At the end of the affair, the Achievers went up to Kim and his father and gave Kim an Achievers yearbook, an Achievers hat and a video of the Achievers program. Kimıs father thought that was nice and gave the Achievers Kimıs book called, ''The Real Rain Man''. Steve asked Kim if he would sign it, Kim said, ''OK'' Kim signed the book with this fraze, ''To the Achievers, Where spring training starts, Kim Peek.'' One of the Achievers named Herby won the flower arrangement that was on the table. Everyone had a good time. One day as Steve was at his office looking over his records to see who he could call and ask for donations. He came a crossed Chris Maddox name and thought, maybe Maddox could be a supporter of the Achievers and make a donation''. Steve called Maddox and asked him if he had time to look over the information that he mailed him regarding the Achievers softball program and if he could make an appointment to see him. Maddox said, ''I need to concentrate on my business and public relations. This is no time to make a request for a donation, I have no time to look over anything I need more time''. Maddox told Steve he would look over the program and let him know what he thinks over the weekend and to set up an appointment with his secretary for late next week. You can tell his nastiness must be taking a tole on his business and personal life.

Carol happens to stops by to see Steve at his office, with some typing she had worked on for the Achievers, Steve told Carol of the conversation he had with her father, Steve asked Carol what kind of relationship she had with her father. Carol, said, ''Matthew is handicapped'', although Matthew doesnıt look handicapped, her farther had problems dealing with the fact, this started when he was born. Matthews father never cared for him and left me to take care of Matthew by myself. My father never took the time to get to know his grandson and left me to take care of my own problems. ''Steve said, ''I hope I didnıt open a can of worms, I didnıt want to start trouble for you and Matthew''. Carol said, ''No, sooner or later we would meet up with him. Now or latter, what's the difference, this time is as good as any. My father doesnıt know Matthew is in the Achievers, I wonder if that will effect his decision to be a supporter or not?''.

Maddox is looking over his appointments on Sunday morning at his home, for next week and sees that he has an appointment to see Steve on Friday, so he looks over the flyers and information on the Achievers. Maddox gets a big surprise when he was looking at the yearbook and recognized his daughter on one of the pages. He couldnıt wait till Friday to ask Steve to verify, if it really was Carol. He called and asked Steve, ''is that a photo of Carol?'' Steve said, ŒŒYes it is''. Maddox then asked where Matthew was in the book. Steve pointed him out. Mason got quiet on the phone. Then Maddox said, ''we still have an appointment on Friday at 10 am. I'll see you then''. Before Maddox ended the call, he asks Steve, ŒŒWhy didnıt you ask me if I would be interested in this project of yours?'' Steve said, ''I had all to do Just to ask you for a donation. I didnıt think you would be interested''.

Friday rolls around and Maddox meets Steve at 10am as scheduled in his office. Maddox looks Steve in the eye and straight out asked if this was a set up? You could see the Maddox was angry, Steve said no and explained that while talking to some of the volunteers about raising funds for our program, he asked them if they could ask around or make any suggestions of businesses or people that he could approach for a donation. Your daughter brought your name up as a person who is successful in the community and someone that could be a supporter. She also said, ŒŒShe hasnıt seen or spoken to you in years and that youıre probably all tied up in your business''. I asked her if she would mind if I contacted you. She said, ''No, and that if I wanted to call go ahead and call''. Steve said, ³I hope I didnıt create a problem. I just thought you might be the right person to get involved in helping the Achievers, because of your influence in the business community. When it comes to helping the Achievers, I would ask the pope. Like it or not''! Maddox said, ³Well, donıt be so sure of your self. I donıt like to be told what to do!² Steve, ³Iım not telling you to do anything, Iım asking you if you would like to support the Achievers and thatıs not telling you what to do!² Maddox replied First of all, I don't think Iım the pope and I havenıt seen or spoken to my daughter in so many years, how do I know she would want to talk to me or even see me and this is non of your business. This situation seemed to be a bothering him and he did not want to discuss it any further. Steve caught on and went back to asking him to be a supporter and if he could possibly help the community with a donation for the Achievers. Maddox said, ''I'll think about it. But don't get your hopes up''.

A week passes and Maddox calls Steve and start's giving Steve some trouble regarding his program and they clash with two different ideas, one for money the other for the players. After Maddox talks to Steve, Maddox get's an idea of starting his own team. Maddox makes his move and begins starting his own team. As the days pass Maddox starts to think of how he could make money with his own team and let's his greed take over. He thinks the idea is good and people will pay to help out the challenged and handicapped if it's marketed properly. Maddox looks into getting his own players for his team. Maddox's specialty is, marketing, if there is a way to make money, Maddox will try no matter what the cost, or who he hurts, he doesnıt care for the Achievers, Steve, his daughter or even his grandson and he's not interested in seeing them, after all these years. He feels the Achievers program is a waist of time with no one making a profit.

A few weeks have passed by, Maddox starts to sees the problems ahead of him, and runs into trouble, never thinking of what's involved in starting his own team. He start's to consider not going through with his plan. Most people he contacted don't like the way he is going about getting players for his team, he's also having a problem getting volunteers, Maddox sees that he need's to put to much of his time into this new venture and thinks about giving up the idea. Maddox calls Steve and tells him of his decision; Maddox was giving every kind of excuse imaginable. You could see right through Maddox story. He was lying and giving reason's that didnıt make sense, this didnıt sit to well with Steve, Steve gets angry and tells Maddox, ''the real reason is your idea was sneaky and selfish and that's the reason you can't go through with your plan of starting your own team. It's not because of what is involved, but because of the way you went about trying to start your own team. People saw through you. Do you think people are stupid? You can't buy People or players. You tried to persuade players to join your team with money. You tried to take advantage of people that have enough problems in life and you misled them down the path of your selfish life, you disregard your daughter and grandson the same way for years. These are the real reasons you can't go through with your so called plan. Be a man and face up to reality. The way you have been conducting your life is shameful. Own up to this ridicules lifestyle and for once in your life make a difference and let the past be gone. Get your life together at least with your family; they need you, as much as you need them. So take what I just said and digest it, and one thing more, I have nothing against you starting your own team, as a matter of fact, I would of helped you out, I didnıt see anything wrong with the idea, I thought it would of given these people another choice to enhance their life and maybe one day play we could play against your team. I even got a kick out of the idea, what a joke it turned out to be. Keep one thing in mind, these people ask for nothing in life, except to get back what they give and that's love and understanding and that's something you ought to learn''. Then Steve says, ''when youıre through digesting your thoughts, give me a call, good by''. Steve hangs up the phone.

Saturday night is the big wrestling benefit for the Achievers. Al Schaefer the promoter called this match ''The New Beginning,'' a new concept in wrestling. It went over well and everyone enjoyed wrestling like it used to be. Steve went with some of the volunteers and a bunch of Achievers, they had a lot of fun. The benefit was a success and the Achievers raised some funds for their program, just as Al said he would do.

Wednesday at the field as the Achievers were starting to play softball, Steve looked around to see where some of the coordinators were so he could start the game. Steve was told that there was a problem with one of the players named Judy, and that she was afraid, and did not want to come out of the van. She wanted to go home, and the coordinators were waiting for another van to pick Judy up. Steve asked if he could go and see what he could do. They said go ahead if you like. Steve picked up an Achievers hat and a shirt and walked back to the van where she was sitting. Steve opened the door and there she was, crying like a baby with the biggest tears rolling down her face. Steve asked ''why are you crying?'' Judy said ''I want to go home''. Judy was about 70 years old and looked so cute with her white hair and trying to hold back her tears. Steve said, ''it is okay to cry, but I have something for you. It's an Achievers hat. Can I try it on you and see how you look in it.'' Judy stopped for a second and said, ''OK.'' Steve put the hat on her head and said ŒŒthat looks good on you and it fits nice''. I have a shirt would you like to have it? It's yours.'' Judy took the shirt and said, ŒŒCan I have it?'' Steve said, ŒŒYes.'' Judy smiled and stopped crying. Steve asked her if she would like the pants, belt, and socks that come with the rest of the uniform. Judy said, ŒŒCan I have them too?'' Steve said, ''sure you can, would you like to come to the field. That's where they are,'' She asked, ''would you hold my hand and help me to the field so I don't get hurt''. Steve said ''sure''. He helped her get out of the van and she held his hand as they walked to the field. Judy sat next to the other Achievers wearing her Achievers hat while holding on to her uniform tightly in her lap watching everyone play softball. Judy enjoyed herself and forgot all about crying and being afraid.

The next batter is Chuck, he's about is about 32 and likes to be a pitcher, he can also hit a ball way out to the out field, almost every time he gets up to bat. He has a good eye on the ball. Chuck has a speech and hearing problem, which makes it harder for him to talk, but he tries and manages to communicate with a few words, His favorite is, ''you my friend'' and ''I love you''. Chuck is one of the pitchers on the Achievers team, and always wants to be on the Yankee Achievers, not the Met Achievers.

Chuck is pitching today and he throws the ball to the same spot most of the time, which would make it easy for the batter to hit the ball, except for one thing: he has a tendency to throw the ball to the left of the plate, making it impossible to hit. No matter how many times he tries, it still goes to the left and as many times as Steve says, ''Chuck, throw it over the plate'', the ball still goes to the left. To solve the problem, Steve has Chuck move to the right of the pitching mound. After each pitch he moves him more to the left, until he throws the ball over the plate. Sometimes he is so far off the pitchers mound you would think he's playing shortstop and sometimes he's a few feet from the third base line. It's a funny situation but it work's, and that's what counts. Chuck is very patient with the batters that need special help. He responds with compassion, making the person feel comfortable.

The first batter up is Aurora, It was Auroras first time at bat and her mother was not to sure if she could play softball because Aurora only has the use of the right side of her body and a little bit of her left side, she is able to walk and manages to run around the bases. She uses hand signs to communicate. Aurora is 26 years old, and really wants to play softball. Aurora didn't let her challenge get in the way; she was determined to play softball. Aurora asked Steve for some help because she could only hold the bat with her right hand, her left hand was closed and Steve had to moved her thumb and finger to opened them enough so it held the bat in place, and it worked. Aurora holds the bat straight up, along side of her right shoulder waiting to hit the ball. Chuck pitches the ball and Aurora pushes the bat forward and misses the first pitch. Then on the next pitch, she pushes the bat forward hitting the ball, realizing she hit the ball, she drops the bat and starts to run to first base. When she arrives on first base, she is smiling and is as excited as can be, jumping up and down and very happy. Aurora's mother saw how Aurora loved to play soft ball, she said she is going to buy Aurora her own bat.

Back at Maddox office....Maddox has given a lot of thought to what Steve had said and brought to his attention. It was a rude awaking and something that was needed for a long time. Maddox gets the idea he would like to help out some way or another with the Achievers program and thought he would give Steve a call to set up an appointment and meet with him and mend any bad feeling between them and also ask if he could stop by and see the Achievers playing softball one day. Maddox calls Steve and sets up a meeting for 10 oıclock at his office the next day. Maddox and Steve meet for the first time face to face. They shake hands and start to talk about their plans and ideas. Maddox asked Steve how the Achievers originated. Steve said, ''Years ago I would play with my children, Denise, Steven, Raymond and their friends. I really liked the idea of watching them learn. They all had an interest in learning. Like everyone else, they needed someone to instruct them in certain areas. My son Steven and some other kids were turned away at a little League team because the positions were filled by other players. The coach in charge said to them, ''come back next year'' you should of seen their faces and tears while holding their gloves, it was heartbreaking. This bothered me and I said, some day I'll start a team where no one will be turned down. As the years passed my son Raymond joined Special Olympics and I really got interested in helping teach the challenged, it was rewarding. I enjoy the reaction they express while learning, it's a great feeling''. The meeting is going well, Maddox comes up with some ideas that could help with funding and Steve agrees with the ideas. Maddox asked Steve if he could stop by one of the games. Steve said, ŒŒSure, that would be a great idea, you'll be able to see for yourself the joy they get from the Achievers program''. Maddox stopped for a while, and then said, ŒŒMaybe when I stop by I could see my daughter and grandson''. Maddox asks Steve, ''when is the next game?'' Steve tells him next Wednesday.

Maddox doesnıt know too much about the challenged and asked Steve to tell him about challenged people and their parents. Steve explains, ''Challenged people are just like you and I, they have the same likes and dislikes as we do. They have a mind and feelings as we do, they care about you, me and others, even if they can't show it''. Steve says, ''they can't do certain things you and I take for granted, something as simple as taking a walk alone. They need supervision all their life. That's one of the reasons helping the challenged with programs such as the Achievers is so important. Their lives depend on those who help them. Just look at their expression when you help them, it says it all''. Steve tells Maddox about special parents and caretakers. Steve says, ''They have dedicated their life to care for their child''. Steve tells Maddox, ''The next time you see parents walking with their child at any age, even 50 years old, just think, they have been taking care of their child for 50 years, and are dedicated parents. You'll see love, happiness and a person who enjoys life as it is, never complains and is excited to talk to you about anything. I guess that's where the fraise, special child and special parents come from''. Steve asked Maddox if he would like to be a volunteer coach. Maddox says, ''don't get ahead of yourself, I have my own ideas. I have to get used to the idea of being a supporter, this is something I never did in my life It's new to me; I'll have to go slow. What do you think Iım like you, don't push me''. Steve says OK, OK. They shake hands and Steve says, ŒŒSee you on the field''.

At Wednesdayıs game you should of seen how proud Aurora was when she came to the field with her new bat. She came running up to coach and showed him the bat. She was so happy and proud and all dressed up in her uniform and holding up her new bat for everyone to see. She made everybody happy, especially knowing that Aurora can hit the ball with any bat. Judy comes to the field all dressed up in her uniform looking as proud as can be, She posed for team photos and even got up to bat, Judy went around all the bases and received a high five at home plate. Not bad for a 70 year old Achiever.

A Surprised guest comes to the field it was a football player named Charlie Garner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Everyone got excited and wanted his autograph; Charlie was gracious and signed everything the Achievers gave him to sign, a sheet of paper, books. their hats, shirts, whatever, Charlie signed it, The Achievers gave Charlie a special Achievers hat, Charlie put it on and said, ''Yeah, I like this hat, thanks Achievers, I'm proud to wear it.'' Charlie stayed for awhile then had to leave. He said goodbye and promised to stop by when he is back in town.

Steve tells Carol her father is coming to the field to see what the Achievers are all about and probably will want to say hello. Steve asked her how she felt about him coming. Carol said she was a little uncomfortable and said that she didn't know what to do or say. ''It's been so many years and I wonder how Matthew will react. From time to time Matthew asks me about his grandfather and I kind of get off the subject. I don't know maybe this is the time to see what my father excuse is for abandoning me and his grandson, It really bothers me but I can't let Matthew know, it could start to bother him and that's the last thing I would want''.

Maddox arrives at the game; Steve helped things along with some quick thinking getting a few Achievers to say Hello to Maddox then his daughter and his grandson. You could see the uncomfortable ness among all three of them. They exchanged hello's and Maddox looked at Carol and said, ''How have you been?, I'm sorry for all the time that's passed and if you don't forgive me I'll understand. Carol looked at her father with tears in her eyes and just sort of smiled without saying anything for a moment, then Carol called Matthew to say hello to his grandfather. Maddox shook Matthew's hand saying, ''wow youıre a big fellow and good looking to, just like your mother''. It was an uncomfortable moment for all three of them and also for Steve. Even with the tension among them, this meeting seemed to have worked. It was the right time and the right place to have this reunion, it seemed like they wanted to have this meeting. You could see all three of them enjoyed seeing each other. To break the tension Steve said, ''OK Matthew let's get going, we have a game to play''. Steve told Maddox to do what ever he wanted; he could coach, help out with the refreshments or watch the game. Steve told Maddox, ''the Achievers are for everyone, The Rules are...There are no Rules...Accept one... Only the Achievers play!'' Steve said, ''Please do what ever you like, everyone is an Achiever and you are part of the Achievers, go and have some fun and have something to eat or drink. Remember only the Achievers play!'' Maddox said, ''OK, OK''.

An Achiever comes up to Maddox named John, John tells Maddox, ''today is my birthday and my mom brought a cake for everyone and at the end of the game, everyone will sing Happy Birthday to me, and you can have a piece of cake too''. Maddox gets a big kick out of this and says, ''OK that sounds good'' and tells John happy birthday. Maddox sees how his grandson is evolved with the Achievers, It made him proud to see Matthew not only playing but also helping those Achievers that need help. Maddox saw Matthew help a player that couldnıt speak; Matthew was so kind and so understanding that it moved him. He saw the way he was helping all the other players and it touched a spot in his heart, causing him to choke up with a tear in his eye. The next batter is Sharon who is very shy and timid, Sharon was afraid to get up to bat. With the help of one of the volunteers Sharon was brought to the plate to hit the ball. The volunteer told Steve, Sharon had never done anything like this before and she was scared. Steve told Sharon not to be afraid, and he would be here to help her. After a few swings she managed to hit the ball and ran to first base, and then she ran the rest of the bases and crossed over home plate to receive her high five. Sharon had a great big smile on her face and you could see the joy she got from the excitement of playing and running the bases, Sharon looked at Steve and said, ŒŒThat was fun''. Sharon really seemed to enjoy herself.

Another player named Chad who is autistic and doesnıt speak and always stands around on the sidelines not interested in playing softball. He seems to have no interest and doesnıt respond well. But this day he came to the field with his Achievers shirt on. Steve was shocked to see him coming to the plate and wanting to hit the ball. Steve helped him hit the ball and Chad went to first base with the help of a volunteer named Blaze. Blaze helped Chad around all the bases and when Chad crossed home plate for a home run, he stopped and looked around to see that everyone saw him come home. Then he gave Steve a high five and smiled at everyone. This was a major accomplishment for Chad and he knew it. You could see how proud he was of himself, because he has never done this before. It was a special moment for Chad and especially the coaches. It was very rewarding and heartwarming to witness this special event. At the end of the game Just before everyone was getting ready to go home, Sharon came to Steve, looking straight in his eyes and said, ''Thank you, I'm not afraid anymore, I want to do it again, I like to play softball and want to play next week''. The expression on her face was moving.

Back in Maddoxıs office, Maddox starts to get himself together, thinking of ways to deal with his business problems and his personal problems. The Achievers program comes in to his mind and he start's to think of some of the things that went on during the game on Wednesday. He gets a warm feeling of happiness, something he could not explain, but it made him feel good, even with his problems. Maddox liked how it made him feel, Just the fact of receiving so much love from people he didn't even know must of made an impression on him. For the first time in many years he actually wasnıt thinking about his business. His only focus was on the Achievers; he hasnıt really taken the time to do anything for himself. He realized from just seeing how natural and loving the Achievers were even with their problems, that he is missing out on the important things in life, especially the relationship with his daughter and grandson. He start's to think what type of person he has become and realizes that his nastiness hasn't gotten him anything except loneliness. It isnıt good for him or anybody else, especially if he wants to be part of Carol and Matthew's life. He wants to get involved with the Achievers someway or another, maybe be a supporter, give a donation or even take Steve's suggestion and become a volunteer or even a coach. This program has made a big impression on his outlook on life. He wants to be a better person and a part of Carol and Matthewıs lives.

At the field, Steve and Maddox are sitting with some of the volunteers. They are talking about the Achievers program and how it helps so many people. Steve says, ''throughout the years there are so many heartwarming stories of players who have come out of their so called shell. We give them a chance no matter what it takes, by giving them the opportunity to participate, no matter what level their at, It's worth the effort to see them succeed. If they have the desire, were there for them, even if it's as simple as getting them up to bat, something most people take for granted, but to the Achievers, It's a dream come true''. Steve tells Maddox a story of how the Achievers helped an Achiever in New York.

The Achievers were playing softball in New York on a Saturday afternoon. As usual everyone was having a great time playing softball. As the game went on Franks son Andrew came up to bat and hit a high pop up to the outfield and unfortunately two players went for the ball and banged heads. One person was wearing glasses. It was a player named William, I must tell you the type of glasses William was wearing looked like the bottom of a coke bottle with a white and red sport strap about one inch thick to hold them on his head. These were the only pair of glasses William had. Anyway, getting back to the high pop up. When their heads bumped, William suffered a slight cut to his forehead. It was not serious, but to be on the safe side Lillian suggested that some of the volunteers take him to the emergency room and get it checked out. When they returned they told us the good news that he's OK and that It only needed a bandage. One of the volunteers who brought William to the emergency room came over and told me the nurse that looked at Williams cut also noticed his eye was covered with gray film that covered the whole pupil. The nurse asked why don't you have your eye fixed and William's quick response was, ''Are you crazy, they want $4,000 and I haven't got $4,000 to fix it''. When Steve heard this, he said, ''I'll raise the $4,000 from local businesses, I'm sure they will help us raise the money needed''. Steve asked William if he could try to help him have his eye repaired and that the Achievers would raise the money to pay for the doctor's bill. He said OK and was happy to see the interest we all had in trying to help him. Steve told him he needed to speak to his social worker to get permission.

The next day an appointment was made with the eye doctor. Steve had a limousine pick up William at the group home where he was living at and took William to Kings County Hospital in New York City. William had a full examination and check up by the eye specialist, and then was driven back to his group home. The next day Steve received a call from the eye specialist and was told that there was nothing that can be done to save William's eye and that William should have had an operation six years ago and now it was too late to repair his eye. The Doctor said, ''His vision in that eye is almost blind. He sees very slightly around the edges, not helping his vision at all. The doctor gave two alternatives. One alternative was to remove the eye and replace it with a glass eye and the other was to leave it as it is. Steve explained the situation to William and gave him the two choices the doctor suggested. William said he would rather leave his eye as it is. Steve said, ''I only wish I could have known of his problem years ago, I would have been able to help him save his vision in that eye''.

Steve and Frank thought William needed a good pair of glasses, a pair that will suit him better then the coke bottle glasses he was wearing. So they took William to an eyeglass center and had him order a prescription pair of glasses with a frame that he chose by himself. You should have seen the expression of joy on his face when he got his glasses. He not only could see better, he also looked handsome in his new glasses. After looking at himself in the mirror, he looked over at Steve and Frank with a great smile and said... ŒŒThank you a Thousand Times''. A phrase they both won't forget, especially coming from an ''Achiever''.

Steve, Maddox and the volunteers start making plans for a fundraiser. Steve is going to ask some of the local entertainers to help put together a ''Rock n Role show'', to help raise funds. One of the volunteers suggested that they look around for a comedian to open this event. Steve said he could ask his friend Randy who's a stand up comedian called, ''Rock'n Randy''. Steve said, ''Randy preformed for the Achievers in New York and they loved him. We could ask Randy to open this event for the Achievers, it would be fun. It just so happens that Randy will be visiting his parents here in Florida around the time of this event''. Everyone agreed and said they have to find a place to have this fundraiser that won't cost too much money.

Maddox says, he knows a great place where they could hold this fundraiser at. He has a friend that has a restaurant named Argento's. They have the best Italian food in town. Maddox says, ''I'm sure Sal would like to donate his restaurant for the Achievers, of course he would put out enough food for everyone to enjoy at no cost to the Achievers. Maddox says he'll call Argentos and ask him in the morning. The next day Maddox gets the OK and the date is set for a good time. All the plans are put together, such as the amount of food and cake that's needed and the entertainment. Everything is ready.

The Achievers have their fundraiser dance with about 250 people. Everyone has a great time Eating and dancing. There was an Elvis impersonator that did his act and he passed out Teddy Bears while he was singing his songs, also Todd Rogers, The King of Video Games, a Guinness Book World Record Holder came to the event, the fundraiser was a success. The Achievers raised some funds for their organization and everything worked out fine. Maddox Got to Dance with his daughter, which made him feel great, you could see it on his face. He Also had some laughs with his grandson Matthew.

At Wednesdayıs game, as the teams were setting up to play softball, Joe's daughter Tina who is 33, wanted to be the catcher. One reason is to be next to the coach, she's like Steve's shadow. Tina always asks Steve, "you know why I like you?" and Steve answers, "No, I can't understand why", (fooling around). She says, ''I know you a long time, and because your always on my back''. (Steve tells her she needs to drink water to be healthy), so she drink's water and makes sure she let's everyone know it and says Steve's on her back. Tina likes to go with Steve and his son Raymond to McDonalds at the end of the game and have some fun, maybe the reason she wartıs to be with Steve is to get a hamburger.

When Tina gets up to bat, she hit's the ball and runs to each base like everyone else, but when she gets to third base, she becomes ''Charging Tina''. She focuses on Steve, only Steve, she waits for the batter to hit the ball, and then in a charging manner she runs home as fast as she can, then jumps on Steve with her arms and legs wrapped around him. At times Steve forgets and he's not ready for this attack. You can imagine the shock along with the extra weight of her on Steve, Steve has all to do to stand up while trying not to fall down, She's holding on to Steve as tight as she can with a big smile, her face as red as can be and she says excitedly, ''I did it Steve, I did it'' .Steve is looking at her, face to face, nose to nose and holding on to her so she don't fall, then Steve say's shakinly, ''Yes Tina, you got a home run''. The next batter is Margaret, 36 years old. When Margaret comes up to bat, she has a favorite saying, she say's, ''here comes trouble''. Margaret hits the ball after the third pitch, she drops the bat and runs to first base with her hands spread out like an airplane with the biggest smile on her face, then she says, ''Here comes trouble''.

Another player comes running home to receive a high five; Steve has to pull the catcher off home plate. His name is Clifford; he is about 25 years old and doesnıt talk much, but tries to communicate with some sounds and hand jesters. He is always dusting off home plate before the batter comes to hit and sometimes in between each pitch. He's a neat freak. Clifford likes to have home plate dirt free no matter how long it takes him. Steve has to grab the straps on the back of his chest guard and pull him off home plate so he doesnıt get hit by the runner, It's the funniest thing to see, Steve's pulling him back to his position with the strap stretching it like a rubber band. Clifford also goes after missed balls, Steve grabs for the strap and it stretches out a little and it brings Clifford back to his place. It's funny to see. When a batter came up to the plate and hit a high pop up to the outfield. William ran as fast as he could to where the ball was hit. Then he jumped up and caught the ball and landed in a split holding the ball up in the air for everyone to see. That took some doing, and I'd say that was a great catch, especially for an Achiever.

Matthew got sick and suddenly passed away. It was a shock and very sad for everyone. He'll be missed not only on third base but also in our hearts. It was heartbreaking for all of us, especially for his mother. Carol calls Steve and tells him the bad news, her son Matthew had passed away suddenly at her house. There was nothing she could do. She tried to help him without success; this was so unexpected and devastating to everyone. The Achievers were notified of the sad news. They comforted Carol as best as they could. Steve's son Raymond wanted Carol to feel better and told her that Matthew is in heaven and he's okay. She should look up to the sky at the stars, and look for the brightest star and that's where Matthew is. He said ''when you think of Matthew, just look for the brightest star and you'll know where he is''. Raymond then told her that he would hit a grand slam for her, and he wanted Matthew to catch the ball and no body else. The grand slam would be just for her and Matthew. Well you could just imagine how Carol felt. It gave her comfort especially coming from one of the Achievers.

Maddox was notified and he also was devastated and confused, he took it very badly. He felt that a part of his life was taken away from him. He felt it was unfair and started to go back to his old ways of being nasty and bitter. He felt he had a good reason this time. Maddox started to be nasty to his daughter and even Steve. He was taking the loss of his grandson very hard. Maddox got into a confrontation with Steve about the Achievers Program, something that could have been worked out normally, but Maddox was not himself and became his old self and carried on uncontrolled asking Steve to get out of his office. Steve stopped Maddox dead in this track, telling him he had a miserable life so far, only because of himself. Heıs been selfish and uncaring to everyone. Steve says, ''this has made you a miserable person. You should of learned something from Matthew and the Achievers, Steve says ''Life is but a dream, itıs what you make it. Matthew knew that when he saw you happy and caring, as a loving grandpa, he forgave you and accepted you as you are. This is what you should be thinking of, this is the way Matthew wanted it to be. Why donıt you grow up and be a man, be an Achiever". Then Steve says, "I though you might have a heart, if you do, then prove it". And walks out.

Steve and his son Raymond have to go to New York to assist with the Achievers softball program in Flushing N.Y. Raymond plays softball in Florida and in New York,

A couple of weeks passed and the Achievers program had started in New York. They were about 5 or 6 weeks into the season. The next game would be a game Steve won't forget. Steve is behind home plate, when a batter comes up and hit's a high pop up, way out to the outfield. An Achiever named William ran as fast as he could to catch the ball. He jumped up and caught it and landed in a split, holding the ball up in the air for everyone to see. That took some doing and I'd say that was a great catch, especially for an Achiever. The next batter was his son Raymond, Steve didn't realize the bases were loaded, Raymond swung a couple of times, then hit a high fly way out past 2nd base allowing him to run all the bases bringing in all 3 runners to receive their High Five, giving him a grand slam. When Raymond ran around to home plate he stopped and looked Steve in the face, pointing his finger at him and said "Dad this grand slam was for Matthew up in heaven, I told you I was going to get a grand slam for Matthew and his mother''. Well this blew Steve away. He couldn't believe Raymond had remembered what he said he was going to do the next time he got up to bat. With all the time that had passed, being in New York a 1000 miles away and playing with another group of Achievers, he still remembered the promise he made to Matthews mother.

That night, Raymond had to call Carol and give her the good news reminding her of his promise, he explained how he came up to bat with the bases loaded, and how he missed a couple of pitches then saw the ball come over the plate and hit it to the outfield, and when he saw everyone come home he knew he hit a grand slam and thought of the promise he had made to Carol. When Raymond finished telling his story to Carol he then told her ''I got this grand slam just for you''. Then added that, ''Mathew caught the ball in heaven, Just for you!''

Back at Maddox's office things quiet down and Maddox starts thinking of his grandson and daughter. He realized how selfish he was and how he has hurt their relationship throughout the years. Maddox wants to mend things if at all possible with his daughter. He wants to get involved with the Achievers project; it would be in memory of his grandson. Maddox starts thinking about the Achievers and realizes, he never asked Steve how he started the Achievers, or what was his motivation to start the Achievers. Maddox calls Steve and asked him to stop by his office when he had some time, because he would like to talk over a few things regarding the Achievers program. Steve stops by at Maddox office and the conversation begins with how the Achievers started Steve tells Maddox, ''Years ago I would play with my children, Denise, Steven and Raymond and their friends. I really liked the idea of watching them learn. They all had an interest in certain areas. My son Steven and some other kids were turned away at a little league team because the positions were filled by other players. The coach in charged said to them, ''Come Back Next Year''. You should have seen their faces and tears while holding their gloves. This bothered me. My son Raymond joined Special Olympics and I really got interested in helping to teach the challenged. It was rewarding. I enjoy the reaction they express while learning, it's great. I thought it would be nice for them to have their own softball team. With the help of my son Raymond and his friend Jimmy, the name ''Achievers'' was created. They both thought that would be a good name.

I asked around for volunteers at the Larry Hirsch Sunday Morning Bowling for the challenged, at the time his program has been going on for 30 years. I asked Frank De Maeyer and his wife Lillian if they would like to start the Achievers with me and they said, ''Yes''. That was back in 1998.

I also started an Achievers softball and bowling program here in Florida in 2001, with the help of Joe and Rose Caruana. We started with about 15 players and now we have about 100 players and growing.

When I tell someone that I started a program for the handicapped and challenged I often have this question asked to me: What type of challenges do they have? I tell them all types from not being able to talk or walk, all the way up to being high functioning, even being able to drive a car and hold a job. There's no limit. I then go on to say when it comes to who is a challenged person, we all fit in somewhere between A to Z. yes even you and I are challenged to a certain extent. Some of us function at a higher level than others. The fact is those who are lower functioning need a little help from the rest of us that are higher functioning. It's easy to figure out. Some people never get the opportunity to meet or talk to a challenged person, They never give it any thought and just go on their way, and that's okay because everyone has a life to live and thatıs the way it should be. But if you come across a person or could take the time to talk to a challenged or handicapped person you could learn a thing or two. I'll bet you never gave it a thought that you or anyone else could learn from someone that's challenged or handicapped. Some people don't know what it is to have a special child. I've heard many people throughout the years say, ''I don't know how a parent handles a handicapped or challenged child. I would never be able to handle it. I couldn't cope with the situation. You have to be a special person''. When I tell them that I have a program for the handicapped and challenged, their response is. ''You're a special person, there are not too many people like you, I know I am not one of them''. How wrong they are. I tell them, you automatically start to deal with the situation. If you have a special child, all you need is a heart''.

Maddox asks Steve, "What is the main guideline or rules to follow with the players and the volunteers'". Steve says, "When I coach, I have one thing in mind, '"The Rules are, There are no Rules, (except one), only the Achievers Play"! I'll do whatever is necessary to see that a player gets the full feeling of playing softball, adjusting to any situation. Everyone benefits from this program. You can see there is a special bond and interest that develops between the players and volunteers. Ask any of the volunteers and they'll tell you of the satisfaction they get when they interact with the players and give the extra support needed at the right time. What they get in return is more than you can imagine. You can see the joy on their faces. Steve tells Maddox, These are some of the reasons why the Achievers program is so successful. It's not only helpful, it's very rewarding. Steve asked Maddox if he answered his questions. Maddox said, ''yes and you have helped me make my decision in becoming a volunteer of the Achievers of America. I hope you will accept my request, I would be proud to wear an Achievers shirt and it would be an honor. Steve and Maddox shook hands. Then Steve said, ''You'll do just fine, the Achievers welcome you with open arms''.

At Wednesday game it's Annie's turn to bat, a well-seasoned softball player. Her father practices with her and Annie loves to play softball. She even has her own bat, and has her own style of hitting that is unique. When Annie gets up to bat she goes through a ritual such as flipping her bat and catching it with one hand, then she lift's her left foot and hit's the dirt off her shoe with the bat, then she repeats the same for her right foot hitting the dirt off. Now she's ready to hit the ball. She holds the bat up and stands in a professional pose waiting for the ball to be pitched. If she doesnıt like the pitch she won't swing and the catcher throws the ball back to the pitcher. Then Annie has to go through her routine, flipping the bat, hitting the dirt off her shoes with the bat, first one, then the other, then takes her famous pose at the plate and is ready to hit the ball. Annie will do this for every pitch until she hits the ball. It's really comical and something to watch.

Bob is the next batter. He likes to pitch sometimes, but his favorite position is first base. When Bob gets up to bat he means business, and really gives it his best shot. Even when he hits the ball, he gives it his best shot. When Bob runs, he runs with all his might. He puts everything into it. You can count on Bob to come home sliding, or doing a flip and sliding over home plate. This is Bob's thing and he does it well, even when not necessary he still does it well. I don't think his grandmother like's the Idea. She has to clean his uniform each week.

When Mary Ann, gets up to bat, she becomes an actress. She says ''OK pitch a good one to me.'' then someone yells out, ''Mary Ann do your dance,'' That's all it takes for her to start her act, She starts to wiggle in the cutest fashion, moving her butt from side to side, standing in one place and shaking her hands up and down. And to finish off her dance, she puts her finger in her mouth and makes a popping sound, giving everyone a smile. Then she concentrates on hitting the ball. She runs the bases to come home and receives a high five. Someone yells out, ''Mary Ann do the butterfly'' and she does the same dance. Instead of making a popping sound, she puts her hands up along side her face and wiggles them like a butterfly. Like I said, Mary Ann becomes an actress.... She's a class act.

It's Richard's turn to bat, he's a quite fellow and doesnıt talk too much. He likes to play softball and with a little assistance loves to hit the ball. When Richard hit's the ball, he's off and running as fast as can be, running all three bases. But when he gets to third base, and heading for home, he really speeds up. I have to be sure that the catcher is not in the way or he'll knock him over. As Richard is running and approaching home plate his pants starts to slip down to his ankles. He manages to reach the fence and then he falls down. I get him up and fix the situation. He acts like everything is ok. This has happened more than once. We have a photo of the first time it happened. He has everyone laughing. Now when Richard gets up to bat, we not only make sure he wears a helmet, we ask his coordinator to tighten up his belt so he doesnıt loose his pants.

At the end of the game, all the volunteers are gathered around Rose choosing what food and refreshments are needed for the up coming Bar-B-Q. Maddox helps with some of the plans and insists on paying for the trophies. They decide on what type of entertainment they should have and who they should ask to come to the Bar-B-Q, they make up a list for what they need, like chicken, franks, burgers, home made dishes that family members bring, also cakes, watermelon, and more, everyone will have a good time.

The day of the Bar-B-Q... Everyone is excited and having fun playing softball and enjoying all the food. On this special day, the Achievers get to play against the parents and volunteers. It's the last game of the season, the parent's and volunteers are allowed to play against the Achievers and of course, the Achievers beat them. When Steve is not looking, he gets drenched with ice water from the Achievers. Everyone is having fun. The Achievers Trophies are given out to all the players and the volunteers; everybody is smiling holding up their trophies. It's a wonderful time.

After everything settles down, a few people got up to give a speech to the Achievers. Then Senator Mike Fasano gets up to give his speech. He has a surprise for everyone, It was from the State of Florida, he waited till the end of the activities to make his special announcement. He wanted this to be a surprise and It was a big surprise all right, Senator Fasano said, ''I have great news for the Achievers and I have someone I'd like you to meet, this is Representative Peter Neir who has been assisting me with your request for a grant. Iım proud to announce the State of Florida has approved this grant. You are now going to be able to build your three building complex and have your dream project come true. We are proud to be part of this organization along with the local business in the area. I would like to thank you Steve and all the volunteers for all you have done to make this a reality and all those who have helped from the community and local business that has contributed to this project. Also Chris Maddox, for the extra support that was needed to receive this grant. Thank you, and may God Bless You All, ''Let's go Achievers''.

Everyone screams with cheers and laughter dancing around, hugging each other, smiling, shaking hands, jumping up and down for joy. Carol gives her father a big hug and looks over at Steve and gives him thumbs up. Steve is dancing with the volunteers and Maddox is hugging his daughter. What a way to end this story that has only just begun.

The End
